Swale women urged to take cervical screening tests

by Jennie Wakuche

As part of a national campaign for the prevention and early treatment of cervical cancer, women in Swale are being encouraged to undergo regular cervical screening tests.

Most common among women aged 18 to 65, and the second most common cancer to affect women under the age of 35, cervical cancer is caused by the human papillomavirus. The disease is often completely preventable, and in health centres across Swale, screening is available free of charge.

The Pap smear is the most common of these screenings. Ideally, it should be done once every year for 3 years and if the result is negative, it should be continued once every 3 years.

If cervical cancer is detected and appropriate intervention or treatment commenced early, further spread of the cancer is stemmed and often completely treated successfully.

In the UK, the number of women seeking tests rose dramatically following the death of Big Brother star Jade Goody in 2009. However the director of public health, Dr John Rodriguez, in a recent statement indicated that the 'Goody effect' has not sustained its momentum, stating that  ”Recent figures show that numbers attending have dropped again. Cervical cancer is almost always preventable. If you’ve had a letter inviting you for screening don’t ignore it - the test takes just five minutes and it could save your life."

Cervical Screening Awareness Week runs from June 7 to June 13. It aims to educate females about the second most common cancer to affect women under the age of 35.
