Why the iPad is King
By
Olu
Oguibe
(There is
a little story behind this piece by the poet, artist and Art
History professor. It began with Nnorominsky Azuonyeskov
posting his sketch below on Facebook. Ebele Okoye-Weber
responded to the sketch by saying; “To think that one cannot
print directly with the stuff makes me wonder why the world
has gone so stupid. It was released in Germany a few days
ago and one need to see the queue as from 1.00am…Crazy
folks!” This verbal attack on the iPad brought out from Olu
Oguibe the response that has formed this article. This is
the ultimate user review of the iPad. I even joked with
Professor Oguibe that after this, Steve Jobs should give him
a job.)

Printing is an obsolete form, though,
like fax and the floppy disk. That said, I can still output
content from my iPad at home or while on an airplane,
straight to my office networked printer. Or better still,
email my document to a recipient. I can team-edit the
document with my work team since I can access the group
server from the men's room at Heathrow or the street cafe in
Barcelona or while at a friend's party in Milan.
I was reading the news on the BBC mobile site today re: the
UK reception of the iPad, and one of the early enthusiasts
was going on about how the iPad is a wonderful device for
consuming content but not for producing it. I thought, wow,
what a revelation! I've been producing content on the iPad
since Day One. And just in case my drawings and designs on
the iPad are not quite "content" for the fellow in question;
with the iPad Pages app, I can write, design, and produce a
complete, illustrated newsletter which can be output in any
format, digital or print.
I could also write an entire novel if I knew how to write
novels. I could write my novel in long hand on the iPad,
again if I were a novelist. At least I can write a passable
poem or write and file a story for publication about the
fear of King iPad.
I can put together a spreadsheet and graphic charts
presentation that should be ready for projection at a board
meeting once I get off that hypothetical flight. And don't
worry about a projector 'cos I've got my pocket LED
projector with me, so you can expect an 80" projection of
the presentation when I get there.
Of course, I can read or listen to the news as well, check
the weather, book my hotel and rental car en route, and the
car needs not have a GPS navigational device because I've
got one, my iPad, which is also my entertainment device (for
not just music but watching anything in my 50-movie carry-on
library), my e-book reader with the book that I just bought
from Amazon.com while in the taxi to the airport, my digital
magazine library, my restaurant and local pharmacy locator
while on the road, and my Skype VOIP device in case I can't
use my phone.
O, dear, I forgot an important document on my computer at
home. No worries, if I am well organized, all I need do is
ftp or sftp or web-browse into my home server from the iPad
and grab the document no matter what kind it is.
How's that for a 7"x10" slim little bugger of a mobile
device!
I own a netbook that I never used past the first few days
because it was redundant; I already had 2 laptops. But not
so the iPad.
True, with some tweaking and a few more
productivity-oriented features it could have been the most
thorough revolution since the Apple Macintosh, but with some
basic ingenuity on the user's part, one can do practically
anything with the iPad, including wedge the door with it
(the mirror glass screen is indestructible) or fend off a
robber at the bank. I'm sure Apple would replace the device
on account of your bravery when it gets in the news, LOL.
But seriously, the iPad is the ultimate family digital
device. While a homely couple can play scrabble on it, use
any of the 28,000 recipes on the free Epicurious app to fix
a quick meal or cater a holiday weekend party while
listening to a live broadcast on the BBC--or use the iPad to
order out pizza should something go wrong with the stuff in
the oven--reading a colour illustrated book on it is an
experience that no child will forget.
And what was that job with Jobs again? I'll take it.
