Swale
Life Writing Workshops
for
Young People
By
Christine Locke
We are delighted to
announce a series of quarterly writing workshops for young
people to be held in Sittingbourne, and on the Internet.
Here are some basic information about the workshops. Other
details will be made available in due course.
1.0. Project Title
Swale Life Writing
Workshops for Young People.
2.0. Target Age Range
This project is targeted
at aspiring writers between the ages of 11 and 19. The
workshop classes will be split into two; one for 11 to
15-year-olds, and the other for 16 to 19 year-olds.
3.0. Frequency
The workshops will be
held 4 times a year in March, June, September and December.
The maiden workshops shall be held in March 2011.
4.0. Project
Objectives
4.1. Development of basic
professional or vocational writing skills in young people.
At the end of the workshops, attendees will have been
introduced to the basic expectations of the quality of a
well-written article or story.
4.2. Provision of
alternative out-of-school intellectually-stimulating
activities.
4.3. Provision of an
opportunity to young people to explore career opportunities
in journalism and the creative writing world.
4.4. Boosting of personal
confidence in the attendees that show the most promise by
getting their edited works published in an issue of Swale
Life magazine. Such morale-boosting achievements will
invariably encourage such children to stay out of trouble,
aspire for more, and may reduce crime or involvement with
gangs.
4.5. By encouraging the
attendees to write about things happening around them, they
will get an opportunity to tell their own stories and learn
to pay attention to their sociological environments.
5.0. Workshops Scope
The workshops will be
divided into two main areas; Journalism and Creative
Writing.
5.1. The Journalism
classes will deal with Life Writing, Travel Writing, Fashion
Writing and Essay Writing. They will also explore News
Writing and News Reporting for the print media.
5.2. The Creative Writing
Workshops shall cover such areas as Poetry, Fiction, Drama,
and Creative Non-fiction.
6.0. Workshop Delivery
Methods
We shall hold live
workshops whereby those who live nearby may physically
attend and meet other aspiring writers and meet workshop
leaders face to face. We shall also hold online workshops by
setting up an online group to give young writers outside the
Sittingbourne area an opportunity to benefit from the
workshops by attending online. Relevant Security will be in
place in the Internet workshop forum. For instance, the
e-mail addresses, location or other contact details shall
not be available in the forum.
7.0. Expected Outcomes
By the end of the
workshops, it is expected that all of the attendees will
have been well introduced to the various ways of sourcing
ideas and inspiration, how to organise their ideas, getting
on with the writing bit, revision habits, polishing their
stories, and how to sell their stories to editors and
publishers. In addition to this, the attendees that produce
the works that show the most promise will get to see their
work published in an issue of Swale Life magazine online.
If you are interested in participating
in these workshops, approach in writing first by sending an
e-mail to
